Subject : net-art01 arena results
From : atty atty@%%%%%%%%%%.com
Date : 2002/08/16 Link : http://www.net-art.ws http://www.net-art.ws/the_results01.html

Hi jimpunk,

somewhat belatedly here are the results for the popular online vote (the only vote) for sites entered to the open 'net art' arena, net-art01 http://www.net-art.ws

congrats to everybody who took part, either by visiting the sites listed or contributing sites to be listed

especial congratulations to those who got the most virtual applause with Mark Napier http://www.computerfinearts.com/collection/napier/ekg/index.html heading the procession

thanks to those who virtually sat on panel, made comments etc Alan Jennifer Sondheim, Alex Galloway, Meiko and Ryu, Arcangel, Richard Barbeau , Roberta Bosco and Stefano Caldana

we look forward to the participation of all for net-art02 which should open at end of this year.

finally, very sad to relate, that the person whose work appears sixth on this list, Tiia Johannson, died recently at the terribly young age of 37. Our commiserations to her husband, Raivo Kelomees and two children.

laters atty

net-art01
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The net-art01 event functions as an open friendly gathering for 'net-art' where once a year we can get together the stuff
we have all been working on and take a look around. By asking you to vote from 10 to -5 on the sites you visit we hope
we have created a system (however limited) for you to express your approval, enjoyment etc. or otherewise of these projects
that have been created for the web during 2001.

RESULTS net-art01 by order of votes received

kmuni by sinz shih scored 47 points

K"muni is a city within a megastructural system. Each K"munian lives in his very own cube. Inside the cube-structure is an ÓenvelopedÓ world; outside the cube-structure is an invisible reality that no single person can never fully comprehend. K"munians only care about the world they can see and occupy. The world outside their cube-structures is non-existent to them. Although they all live in identical cube-structures and use the products which have millions of identical copies, K"munians create unique environments for their living spaces by their diverse desires. Everyone uses the same systems for transportation, communication, working and living within K"muni. By connecting their cube-structures with other cubes mechanically or by creating a virtual connection with other cubes, they can move both physically and virtually. K"munians cannot live without their cube-structures-they become components of the megastructure. They lead active lives until they die. New citizens will be born while the system is still running.

The Grid by Brian Judy scored 44 points
ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
his network of browser interface studies accepts the spectatorÕs gesture as part of the artistic moment. Mouse movements within The Grid are converted to data adjustments where user kinetic energy charges the work. Every click and roll creates a presence and feeds the power grid of action and responses. Real power is illusory, though, as interaction doesnÕt necessarily mean everyone gets a seat at the desktop. The action/response matrix within this work is a personal attempt to simulate creative exchange, but retain authoritative control in an increasingly interactive world.

New York City Map by Marketa Bankova scored 36 points
ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
This project is a sort of virtual guide to New York City. But it isn"t a guide in the usual sense. While ÓwalkingÓ through these Web pages you can, as you choose, find yourself ÓstandingÓ on a particular street, go by subway, look at people, listen to sounds and read something. In contrast to traditional maps, the aim of NYCMap is not to document the layout of the city or point out its most famous tourist attractions. With the NYCMap I"ve tried to capture the atmosphere, the energy, or that Something which I think makes New York City different from other cities with skyscrapers. At the same time, this project is my personal diary.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
NewZoid is the world"s only automatic and continuous generator of FALSE DAILY NEWS HEADLINES. NewZoid gives out more false information than is produced by all governments, corporations and media sources put together. NewZoid roams the Internet, grabbing real news headlines and endlessly smashing them up and recombining the fragments into reasonably coherent, absurd, amusing, shocking and thought-provoking new headlines. Plus, users can write their own headlines and submit them to the NewZoid process and also vote on favorites. All of this is subversive infotherapy designed to reflect and possibly counteract the effects of living in the bewilderness of an age of Óinformation.Ó NewZoid has been running on its own since April, 2001, untouched by human hands or minds.

Grids by Eduardo Navas scored 29 points
You need Flash to visit it
ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
Rosalind Krauss presents the grid as anti-narrative -- as the new religious device that deprives culture of progress. In this project, Krauss" own narrative is problematized when the 30 paragraphs of her essay are split into 30 seperate links which now the user can access at random. Her own narrative has now become anti-narrative or random information -- with no beginning or end (no progress), but rather a never-ending cycle; just like the grid that she refers to in her writing.

bits & pieces is a continuous composition that gets its source sounds from the web. Every morning a special search process looks for web pages with links to sound files. If links are found, the sound files are downloaded. The day"s "catch" is then used to create the pieces in bits & pieces for the next 24 hours. Every 15 minutes a sound generating process randomly picks a few sound files to work with. Once a sound generating process is complete, its output is converted into two mp3 files (one for high bandwidth and one for low). Your mp3 player will play back the ten most recent pieces from newest to oldest. The source samples change daily, so check back in occasionally to hear the latest catch.

Auslander Micro by Andrew Garton, John Power, Bruce Morrison, Justina Curtis scored 9 points
You need PC either IE4+, Netscape4+. Requires Javascript On and Flash 4 to visit it
ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
AuslŠnder Micro has been designed as an interface through which each of its four acts can be explored. Various forms of navigation are provided where the user encounters numerous combinations of text, graphics and sound. The opera follows the afterlife of an Eastern European refugee, a foreigner in every country. In a squalid camp, he passes away in a camp. Years of restless travel and ruthless persecution are thought to be laid to rest, but in death freedom is as allusive as it was in life. AuslŠnder Micro was conceived by Andrew Garton and produced in collaboration with John Power, Bruce Morrison and Justina Curtis at Toy Satellite, Melbourne. v1.2 was produced with Andrew Sargeant who assisted with the implementation of Flash. This provided for more depth and interactivity with sound. AuslŠnder Micro v1.2 was produced by Toy Satellite in association with the Australian Film Commission and the Centre for Animation and Interactive Media (Department of Visual Communication, RMIT University)

Gameboy_ultraF_uk by Baily and Corby scored 8 points
ARTIST'S STATEMENT >>>
The work consists of a Free Software GameBoy emulator whose rendering system has been (pathologically) rewritten to degenerate over time. Game entities mutate into background and interface elements, or appear as fragments of the games binary code. Text begins to emerge as a jumble of characters, sprites and binary data. Scanline bytes are miscopied, transformed and duplicated. Memory is blitted into sections of the screen, as the inside of the game seeps to the outside. Variations in the rendering behaviour are triggered by user interactions implicit in the game play and are manipulated by a Cellular Automata "metabolism" giving rise to inter-related rendering symptoms. The emulator displays an unpredictable agency that injects a subjectifying process into the rendering of the software instructions it executes. code as readymade As software, the emulator is provided as open source code available for others to extend; the binary, source and documentation can be considered as component parts of the work. Thanks to Gilgamesh and Laguna for releasing their Free Software "gnuboy" from which this modification is derived. Rather than a project that has been written from scratch, the code in this sense may be considered a "readymade" into which an artistic intervention has been made. The recast code exists as a dysfunctional branch of the gnuboy emulator"s project tree. The interventions in the code have been documented and commented, allowing for others to add their own attitudinal elements and rendering ailments.

This work combines screen images from CU-See Me reflector sites, text sequences from real-time chat sessions and my Dystopia sound mix which combines audio clips of Christine Nadir, Mark Tribe and Yael Kanerak reflecting on net-based communication. Layers of sound samples from am radio dot-com advertisements fade in and out while the work as a whole has the combined effect of functioning like an extended, self-reflexive conversation taking place in both real and delayed time, mirroring our anxieties regarding on-line communication in an era obsessed with technology.

"Impronta" (Fingerprint) is a conceptual web-art project: a dialog between virtual and real identities. It"s composed by a series of different photos, taken in several places around the world, and now published on the web. This is an ongoing process, being a reflection of everyday"s life. My fingerprint is a link, a real touch, and it remains as a virtual trace. A sort of diary, telling about shiftings, visions, meetings ...
